Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan (Hindi: कैसी ये यारियां), also spelled Kaisi Yeh Yaariyan and abbreviated by fans as KY2 or KYY, is an Indian teen soap created by Richa Yamini and Vikas Gupta for MTV India. The series was produced by BBC Worldwide India and Lost Boy Media Productions. It was loosely adapted from the Korean drama, Boys Over Flowers.[1][2]

The series originally aired from July 21, 2014 to December 31, 2015 for two seasons.[3][2] Season two was embroiled in casting problems, including the departure and return of Parth Samthaan.[4] Voot revived Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan for a third season in 2018.[5] A film and a fourth season aired in 2022,[6][7] followed by a fifth season on JioCinema in September 2023.[8]

Niti Taylor stars as Nandini Murthy (Geum Jan-di/Tsukushi Makino counterpart), a girl attending a prestigious college who goes up against the ruling clique, the Fab 5. The series has an ensemble cast whom all have their own subplots. The main storyline of Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan is the coupling of Manik Malhotra (Gu Jun-pyo/Tsukasa Domyoji) and Nandini.

Nandini Murthy (Niti Taylor) and her brother move into their aunt and uncle's home in Mumbai. She visits the prestigious music college, S.P.A.C.E. Academy. There she and Navya Naveli (Veebha Anand) save Shahid (Pulkit Bangia) from committing suicide after being bullied by the Fab 5, the top band and clique of the school. Nandini and Navya are both offered scholarships to S.P.A.C.E. to avoid bad publicity. Despite turning it down at first, Nandini ends up reluctantly accepting. She becomes friends with Navya, who dreams of joining the Fab 5. Unfortunately, Cabir Dhawan (Ayaz Ahmed) wants to get back at the girls for helping Shahid. The others Manik Maholtra (Parth Samthaan), Dhruv Vedant (Utkarsh Gupta), Mukti Vardhan (Charlie Chauhan), and Alya Saxena (Krissann Barretto) all join in on bullying Nayva.[9]

When the Fab 5 trap Navya in a trashcan, Nandini swoops in to save her. The clique subsequently shift their anger to her. Nandini considers leaving the school until hearing about her brother's progress with his doctor. She brings him to deliver something for their aunt. To her surprise, it turns out to be Alya's house. There Manik takes Nandini's pen, which was owned by her late father, and throws it into the pool. Her brother Rishabh (Steve) jumps into the pool and nearly drowns until Alya's brother, Harshad (Abhishek Malik), saves him. The following day, the Fab 5 use Nandini's pen to force her go along with their dares. She goes through each humiliating dare only for Manik to break the pen. Having had enough, Nandini punches Manik and tells off the Fab 5 in front of the entire school.[10]

On Friendship Day, Manik chooses Nandini as his partner. He acts friendly at first, but ultimately tricks her into going to a party. The Fab 5 attempt to pressure her and Navya into drinking, only succeeding with the latter. Nandini, however, ends up breaking an old artifact owned by Manik's family. Instead of her repaying him, he draws up a contract to make her his servant, or what he calls a "spot girl." Nandini refuses at first, but eventually accepts when he mentions that her family will be bankrupted. Meanwhile, Harshad has returned to S.P.A.C.E. Academy and immediately gets into a fight with his ex-girlfriend Mukti and his sister's boyfriend Manik. Navya becomes infatuated with him quickly. Harshad holds a particular dislike for Manik and meets with Navya to get the full story on him and Nandini.[11]

Harshad's first plan is to target Manik's best friend, Dhruv. The ensuing scuffle results in an awkward, accidental kiss between Nandini and Manik. He bullies her once again until Dhruv comes to her rescue. Navya decides that they should change their target to Alya, whom quickly becomes jealous of Manik's and Nandini's supposed closeness. Manik later sends a free Goa trip to Nandini's aunt and uncle. However, when she still refuses to meet him, he goes to her house. He witnesses her brother have an episode, which reminds him of Dhruv's episodes. Manik now sympathizes with Nandini. After being told their location by Navya, Alya walks in and sees them together. Later, Alya insists that Manik breaks ties with Nandini. He is reluctant at first, but ultimately sends her a text "freeing" her.[12]

Manik later partners with Nandini to learn more about Dhruv's and Rishabh's illnesses. The next day, to pay back Nandini, Alya has two guys go after her. Dhruv steps in to save her, but has to be helped by Manik. Believing Manik to be the culprit behind the attack, Dhruv punches him. Manik is upset with Nandini for being the cause of his fight with Dhruv. He has her expelled from S.P.A.C.E. just as she has joined NH3, a band that includes Harshad, Navya, and Shahid. On top of Manik's and Dhruv's falling out, Cabir is also keeping a secret from his friends. Mukti has a breakdown while on the phone with Alya. Harshad manages to get to her, before she can jump off the roof of her home. The Fab 5 are now determined to come back together, while Nandini's friends run a campaign to reverse her expulsion.[13]

Thanks to Harshad, Nandini's expulsion from S.P.A.C.E. is revoked. Manik is not happy, but cannot do anything at the moment. Later, Dhruv witnesses Alya paying one of the men she sent to attack Nandini. She reveals that she is feeling insecure about her relationship with Manik. Dhruv agrees to keep her secret. Afterwards, he heads to the café Nandini has begun working at. She tells him that they should not be friends due to Manik's hatred toward her. This triggers one of Dhruv's episodes. Nandini calls Manik and the two slowly calm him down. After taking him home, Manik tells him that he can be friends with Nandini. Nevertheless, Dhruv and Nandini wisely decide to keep their friendship a secret at school. Meanwhile, Cabir finally introduces his secret girlfriend, Rose (Scarlett Rose), to the Fab 5.[14]

Without their knowledge, Harshad manipulates a situation for Nandini and Manik to become trapped together. The Fab 5 and NH3 eventually notice their absence, but are unable to locate them. Both bands refuse to join an important jam session organized by Professor Raghav (Rushad Rana), despite the consequences. Nandini and Manik are trapped for eight hours by the time Harshad, Navya, and Alya find them. The next day, Professor Raghav punishes Fab 5 and NH3 by organizing a scavenger hunt in the jungle. During the hunt, Manik saves Nandini when she nearly falls off a cliff. He becomes frustrated when Harshad taunts him for trying to be Nandini's "hero." Dhruv attempts to mend things between Manik and Nandini to no success. Next, the bands get ready for a performance.[15]

Fab 5 and NH3 impress Professor Raghav by teaming up for the performance, giving them both a chance to try out for the upcoming Musicana competition. In the meantime, Manik decides to target Harshad to end their rivalry once and for all. His plan appears to be going well until Alya confesses that she was behind sending those men after Nandini. Manik feels betrayed by her and Dhruv, who kept her secret. He breaks up with Alya, but they pretend they are still together for Fab 5's sake. To win back Manik's trust, Dhruv ends his friendship with Nandini. Professor Raghav later assigns conflicting genres for the Fab 5's and NH3's preliminary entries for Musicana. Amongst this Rose develops a crush on Dhruv, leading Cabir to remind her that she has to pretend to be his girlfriend.[16]

Tensions rise between Fab 5 and NH3 when Professor Raghav insists that they help each other on their upcoming performances, but no one cooperate. Nandini and Dhruv later start talking again. He starts to realize his feelings for her. After seeing Harshad with Mukti, Navya becomes unsure of herself and refuses to rehearse. She ignores Nandini's and Harshad's pleas. Manik learns that Rose is not Cabir's girlfriend. Cabir promises to explain, but asks for him to wait until after the performance. The next day, Navya shows up at the last second to perform with NH3. Manik, meanwhile, nearly misses his performance while looking after Rishabh, whom shows up at the college with his aunt. He manages to perform over the phone. NH3 are declared the winners and Fab 5 the runners-up.[17]

After Manik helped Rishabh, Nandini sees him in a different light. She goes over to his house to thank him, but he refuses to acknowledge the good parts of him. Then, one after another, Fab 5 arrive at Manik's house. He hides Nandini from them, not wanting them to know the real reason he missed the performance. Nandini eventually manages to escape. The next day, she proposes that she and Manik work together to figure out Dhruv's and Rishabh's conditions. Wanting to stay away from her, Manik refuses. Meanwhile, Dhruv starts thinking about love but worries about his condition will affect the woman he loves. When he voices this to Manik, he assures Dhruv that any woman would be happy to be with him. Manik then decides to work with Nandini after all, though they argue from the onset.[18]

Harshad tries a new strategy at breaking apart Fab 5. He convinces NH3 to spy on Fab 5 to learn more about their Musicana performance. Harshad sets his sights on Cabir, who he thinks is hiding something. Nandini is almost immediately caught spying by Manik, to whom she confesses everything. Worried about Cabir, Manik goes after Harshad and stops him from learning Cabir's secret. Manik, however, sees Cabir kiss a man. He comes out as gay to Manik, whom fully accepts him. Feeling hopeful based on Manik's reaction, Cabir tries to talk to his partner, Professor Raghav. He has a much more cynical view on their possibility of being accepted into society. Meanwhile, Nandini and Dhruv officially become friends again. Manik, who has sought comfort in Nandini recently, becomes irrationally annoyed about it.[19]

Cabir arranges for the principal to throw a birthday party for Raghav at S.P.A.C.E. Harshad spikes Cabir's drink, but Nandini ends up with it instead. Navya enters the party and everyone laughs at her new look. She rushes to the bathroom, where Mukti tells her that Harshad is not "worth it." Later that night, Harshad sneaks into Navya's hostel to apologize. She immediately forgives him. Manik finds Nandini in an inebriated state. She does not want to listen to him and runs around the school. Manik eventually manages to bring her home, where he puts her to bed before her aunt realizes anything. The next day, he realizes Harshad's plan and tells him to leave his friends alone. Meanwhile, Alya convinces Dhruv to pursue his crush on Nandini and gives him a makeover.[20]

Manik and his mother host a Diwali party. Nandini comes over early and finds herself in a suggestive position with Manik. He later confesses to her that he and Alya have broken up. Meanwhile, Nyonika reminds Raghav about helping him before and that she will not help him again. Raghav promptly decides to break up with Cabir just as Nandini reveals that she saw them together to Manik. He is angry but comforts his friend. The next day, Manik finds it hard to hold in his anger as Raghav reveals that Fab 5 and NH3 will have to open Musicana together. Cabir convinces him to stop antagonizing Raghav. Later, Harshad overhears Cabir and Raghav talking and finally learns their secret. In the meantime, Dhruv mistakes Nandini's kindness and decides he is ready to ask her out on a date.[21]

Fab 5 and NH3 successfully open Musicana together. Afterwards, Nandini receives a note that she thinks is from Manik. They meet behind the college and she admits that she has feelings for him. She then heads home just before Dhruv arrives. The note was actually from him, but he has arrived late since he wanted to make the date perfect. He tells Manik that he loves Nandini. Manik is devastated but decides to move aside for his friend. The next day before Musicana, Manik lies to Nandini saying that he made Nandini fall in love with him as payback. Nandini is too emotionally distraught to perform and Navya steps in instead. Meanwhile, Harshad gets a video of Cabir and Raghav to use for blackmail. Mukti also struggles with her pill addiction as Alya tries her best to help her.[22]

Notes[]

  • Like Siapa Takut Jatuh Cinta, Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan is not a licensed adaptation of Yoko Kamio's manga. Instead they took inspiration from one of the drama adaptations. In the case of Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan, the series borrows various character and plot elements from the Korean drama.
  • Parth Samthaan, Utkarsh Gupta, Charlie Chauhan, Ayaz Ahmed, and Krissann Barretto made a special appearance on another MTV India series, Warrior High, playing their respective characters.
  • Ayaz Ahmed (Cabir) also portrayed his character's twin, Ranbir, on MTV India's Fanaah, which was also created by Vikas Gupta. Ranbir makes occasional cameos in Kaisi Yeh Yaariaan.
  • MTV Roadies, on which Ahmed was a contestant, is repeatedly referenced on the show.
