Rui: "Is it true you're dating Tsukasa?"
Tsukushi: "What?! N-No, it's nothing like that. Tsukasa has this idea..."
Rui: "I thought so. I'm glad. I've had my eye on you. Why don't you dump Tsukasa and go out with me?"
Rui displays his new personality

Chapter 33 (第33話 () ) of Yoko Kamio's Boys Over Flowers was released in Margaret No.17 in August 1993. It was followed by chapter thirty-fourth, also in August 1993.[1] The chapter was subsequently collected in the sixth volume.

Tsukasa Domyoji begins acting just like Tsukushi Makino's boyfriend. First, he gives her a pager and tells her to come when he calls her. Then he lavishes her family with furniture. Meanwhile, she notices a change in Rui Hanazawa.

Plot[]

Following Sakurako Sanjo's apology, Tsukushi Makino feels that she "still [cannot] bring [her]self to forgive her." She then overhears the F4 talking about Sakurako. Though she does not say anything, she is irritated by their comments since it was all their fault in the first place. Tsukasa Domyoji gives Tsukushi a pager, telling her "when I page you, I want you to come right away." She is annoyed by his attitude, feeling that he is treating her like a "dog."

Tsukushi finds her home overrun with large, expensive furniture which her parents inform her Tsukasa sent. She then receives a page from Tsukasa that says "Call immediately." Tsukushi calls complaining, but he ignores her and tells her to come meet him. She storms over to Amazon and is about to tell him off, when she notices Rui Hanazawa being flirty with a girl. Tsukushi is brought out of her state of shock, when Tsukasa tells her to sit down. She rushes off, after telling him to take back the furniture.

That night, she lays awake thinking about Rui, who used to be "deep and aloof and serious." The next day, she meets him at the emergency exit. He says hello, despite never saying it to her before. Tsukushi asks about France and then about Shizuka Todo. He cuts off her last question with "Is it true you're dating Tsukasa?" Tsukushi tells him no. Rui then says "I've had my eye on you" followed by "Why don't you dump Tsukasa and go out with me?"

Character appearances[]

Notes[]

  • Pagers, which were widely used at the time, were already being phased out by the end of the decade. It was replaced with cell phones in Meteor Garden (2001) and Hana Yori Dango (2005), and eventually a smart phone in F4 Thailand (2021).
  • In volume eleven of the complete edition, Kamio references Tsukasa giving Tsukushi the pager in the "Making-of Hanadan" section.[2]
  • In Hana Yori Dango: The Musical, Tsukasa performs a similar action to overloading the Makinos' home with gifts, though in this case, it is dresses and shoes in boxes.
