"I hate rain. It's my mortal enemy. My name "Haruto" uses the kanji character for "sunny weather." So it makes sense that I'm not my best on rainy days."
—Haruto Kaguragi[src]

Haruto Kaguragi (神楽木 晴 (かぐらぎ ハルト) Kaguragi Haruto) was the Correct 5's leader and heir to Kaguragi Enterprises. He attended Eitoku Academy with his friends Kaito Taira, Sugimaru Eibi, Issa Narumiya, and Airi Maya. His hero was the F4's Tsukasa Domyoji. After falling for Oto Edogawa, he went through many troubles that helped him mature.

Biography[]

Early life[]

Young-Haruto

Haruto as a child

"Actually, her being there really saved me. My old man was really harsh with me at the time and I was too embarrassed to confide in the others."
—Haruto about Amei[src]

Haruto was born on August 5[2] into the rich Kaguragi family as the heir to Kaguragi Enterprises.[6] His father and mother were constantly busy with work throughout his life.[7] As such, the family's butler Kobayashi was put in charge of raising him. Haruto was also constantly bombarded by his father with "tests," regarding whether he was worthy or not to be the Kaguragi heir. Haruto was once left for two days in the mountains, where he nearly starved.[8] He continued trying to gain his father's approval for a long time. Haruto finally gave up when he got the top grade of his year and his father "asked if that's all it took to satisfy [himself]."[9]

He began attending Eitoku Academy as a young child and first met Airi Maya in kindergarten. In the third grade, he became friends with her after gaining Airi's respect during a field trip.[10] He and Airi later ran away from home to an abandoned factory.[11] She confessed her feelings for him there, though he did not realize it at the time. Haruto later became friends with Kaito Taira, Issa Narumiya, Sugimaru Eibi in elementary school.[12][13] During this time, Haruto met Amei Hanawa who supported him during the tough times he was having with his father. She was his first crush. In fourth grade, Amei moved away to recover from an illness but promised to return someday. She later stopped replying to his messages.[14][15]

Middle school[]

Haruto-and-Tsukasa

Haruto makes a promise to Tsukasa to take care of Eitoku

"You're a student at our school, huh. Are you just gonna take it without putting up a fight? How pathetic."
Tsukasa's words that changed Haruto[src]

In middle school, Haruto was regularly bullied by older students, who would take away his money. One day, Tsukasa Domyoji, the infamous leader of the F4, happened to walk by and beat up the guys. Tsukasa turned to Haruto and recognized his Eitoku uniform. He called him "pathetic" for taking the bullying "without putting up a fight." Tsukasa's words sparked an ambition in Haruto to become strong. He began training day and night from that day on. About two years later, the day before Tsukasa left for America, Haruto found him and promised to take care of Eitoku for him. Tsukasa smiled replied "Right, I leave it in your hands."[6]

High School[]

After forming the Correct 5, Haruto started attending Eitoku Senior High with the other members, Kaito, Issa, Sugimaru, and Airi. The group's focus became to combat Eitoku's failing reputation following the F4's graduation. Their chief activities were "peasant hunts." They would find the school's poor students, whom had stopped paying tuition and donations, and forced them to withdraw from Eitoku. A rival school, Momonozono Academy, had popped up during this time and quickly became popular.[6]

Meeting Oto[]

Haruto-after-saving-Oto

Haruto surprises himself by saving Oto

"He and that Tsukushi Makino... Why would he go and choose such a common woman? I cannot accept it. There's no way I care the least bit about that girl! That girl hit my face with a piece of meat! Making her quit the academy is not enough! I'm going to making her suffer for that!"
—Haruto refuses to believe he could have feelings for Oto[src]

Haruto first met Oto Edogawa, when she accidentally ran in front of his car. She quickly rushed off after saying sorry. Later that day, Kobayashi injured his back so Haruto decided to go and pick up his mail-order items from the convenience store himself. He wore a disguise but Oto, who worked there, recognized him anyway. He was so shocked that he left behind his package. In the morning, Haruto tried to intimidate Oto into leaving. They noticed a student being harassed nearby. Oto went to help her, calling Haruto "pathetic" for not doing so. He was reminded of his vow to Tsukasa and gained some courage to step in. Haruto punched one of the guys, earning cheers from the Eitoku students. He did not enjoy the moment for long though as Oto then threatened to tell his secret if he forced her to leave.[6]

The next day, Haruto enjoyed the attention but still worried about Oto. He told his friends that he was being blackmailed by a girl. Issa suggested that he make her his girlfriend. Haruto later asked Oto and her co-workers over to his home. The party did not go as planned, ending in Oto slapping him with a piece of beef.[16] She left after calling him "the worst." Haruto felt humiliated and wanted revenge, instead of just expelling her per Kaito's advice. While spying on her at her work, he saw her being followed by a co-worker. When he tried to grab Oto, Haruto kicked him and he fled.[17] Flustered by his own actions, Haruto admitted to following her. She called him "creepy." Depressed by the word, Haruto had to be carried home by Kaito. Later that night, Oto came to his house and thanked him for saving her.[18]

Later, Haruto forced Oto's co-worker to quit his job. At school, he overheard Oto and her friends talking about a pancake shop. Haruto asked her out to go there with him.[19] He purchased the shop prior to going there that Sunday. While eating, Haruto asked Oto about her reasons for wanting to stay at Eitoku, but then assumed it was because of the F4. He took her on a "pilgrimage" to their homes. At Tsukasa's house, Oto admitted that she was actually staying at Eitoku because of her fiancé.[20] Haruto was so shocked that he called her life "pathetic." She replied "This sad life of mine has absolutely nothing to do with you." Later, Kaito revealed that Oto's fiancé was Tenma Hase, the student president at Momonozono. Haruto fell ill for three days, which Kaito speculated was because he was in love with Oto.[21]

Oto's secret revealed[]

Haruto: "I know this is really rude of me to ask, but I'm going through a lot of upheaval right now. It feels like I'm powerless. In this situation, what would Mr. Domyoji do?"
Rui: "Who knows? He's a wild one. When everything's a mess, he only has eyes for what's most important."
Rui's advice to Haruto[src]

The next day, Haruto and Sugimaru decided to infiltrate Momonozono. They were soon recognized by the other students, who surrounded them. Tenma saved them by calling them his "guests." Haruto felt on edge around Tenma and left soon after meeting him. He found himself outside Oto's job. When she came outside, Haruto asked "Won't I do?"[22] Her coworker, Arisa Konno interrupted as he started to get a stomachache. Konno invited him and Oto to her apartment. Konno left briefly, while Oto made dinner. Recalling his question, Oto assumed he was comparing himself to Tsukasa and gave him some words of encouragement. On their way home, he tried to apologize for being rude previously, but she said "It's fine." Haruto then told her "Don't say that your life has absolutely nothing to do with me."[23]

The next day, Haruto was running late to school. At the school gate, he saw Oto and attempted to greet her. She recoiled from his presence and said "Stay away from me." Oto then asked "Was this your plan all along?," accusing him of getting close to her to "take [her] down." As she ran off, he spotted a flier on the ground that outed Oto as a "peasant." Airi walked up and claimed that she did it for his own good.[10] Noticing how angry Haruto was, Airi attempted to justify her actions. He tried to walk away but she stopped him. Haruto then told her "If you say one more thing, I'm going to beat you up." Later that day, Kaito went to Haruto's house. He conceded that Airi's actions were "really horrid," but Oto's financial status was not going to be a secret forever. Kaito then told him they needed to do a "peasant hunt."[24]

Deciding "There are no exceptions," Haruto went along with it at first. However, when the time came, he could not bring himself to do it. Airi ran downstairs to do it herself and Haruto chased after her. They saw an injured Oto lying on the ground. A second later, Tenma swooped in and saved her. After it was revealed that he paid her donation, Tenma declared that he would "crush" Haruto if Oto was hurt again.[25] That afternoon, Haruto felt guilty about what happened. Looking for a quiet place, Haruto ended up at the emergency stairwell where he met Rui Hanazawa. As Rui was leaving, Haruto asked him "What would Mr. Domyoji do?" Rui replied "[Tsukasa] only has eyes for what's most important." In that moment, Haruto had an epiphany and realized that he was in love with Oto. He raced to the hospital to see her.[26]

Settling things with Airi[]

Airi: "You remembered?"
Haruto: "This was our secret fort, right? Sorry, Airi. Sorry. For not realizing it...For not responding...I'm sorry for all these years."
— Haruto apologizes to Airi[src]

At the hospital, Haruto touched Oto's breast by accident. Oto knocked him out with one punch. After Haruto woke up, she left the hospital and he followed. He apologized for her getting hurt and placed all the blame squarely on his shoulders. She told him "I know that you weren't behind it." Haruto was so happy that she forgave him that he began blushing fiercely. The next day, Haruto confronted Airi and told her "Do it again and it's over."[27] That weekend, he went to the convenience store to see Oto though he made up an excuse. Konno then invited them to hang out with her and her boyfriend, Mi-tan. Haruto was nicknamed "Haruchin" (ハルチン () ) by Mi-tan. At the batting cages, Haruto got a home run and won a prize which he gave to Konno. Afterwards, they dediced to go to a monjayaki restaurant.[1]

At the restaurant, they were accosted by Airi who apologized to Oto. Haruto was skeptical about her sincerity, saying "She thinks she can shed a few tears and all will be forgiven." Oto acknowledged her own lies and forgave Airi. They left Konno and Mi-tan and went to a clothing store. Airi had the employees give Oto a makeover. To Haruto, she mentioned the time they ran away together and asked if he remembered what she said at the time. Haruto was distracted by Oto. Airi then sent him to wait at a café.[11] Airi arrived by herself, saying Oto "went off somewhere." A few seconds later, she showed Haruto a surveillance video of Oto and Tenma. Haruto demanded to know where they were. Airi would not reveal it, so Haruto left to find them. Sometime later, he found the two in the basement of the store and set them free.[28]

Airi went missing for two days. Kaito brought Oto with him to question Haruto. He was still irritated with Airi and told them "I don't care what happens to that girl." Frustrated, Kaito left to go question Issa and Sugimaru. Haruto and Oto soon began arguing and she eventually slapped him. After Oto left, Haruto remembered what Airi said at the factory and realized her feelings for him. He made his way there and picked up Airi from Oto's arms. Haruto apologized as he carried her to safety.[12] A few days later, Haruto went to Issa's flower arranging demonstration at a resort. On the beach, he ran into Oto. Haruto nervously admitted that he was thinking of her. To cover it up, he told her it was "just lip service." He then thanked for helping him with Airi, saying "If you hadn't said what you did, I would have abandoned her for real."[29]

Enter Megumi[]

"Mr. Domyoji, I heard that you dated a commoner girl. And that you even proposed to her. I could never fathom why you did that, but did things go smoothly for you with her?"
—Haruto to his Tsukasa portrait[src]

After Issa's demonstration, Haruto went into the resort's hot spring baths where he found himself face-to-face with a naked girl. He was so flustered that he accidentally slipped. In the lobby, Kaito and Airi told him to give Oto a ride home. He was still nervous about what happened but managed to push the thoughts away. When they arrived at her place, Haruto introduced himself to her mother.[30] The next day, the girl, a model named Megumi Nishidome, visited Eitoku to return his wallet. His friends did not believe his story about how they met was innocent. Haruto thanked her for returning his wallet, but made several attempts to get her to leave. They were seen talking together by Oto, which he had feared. He tried to explain the situation to her, but she told him "It has nothing to with me".[31]

Oto's words shattered Haruto and caused him to become depressed. Megumi, who had followed him, encouraged him to go after Oto and explain everything. Haruto refused, saying "It'll all come crashing down!" Megumi offered to help him practice his confession. He gathered his courage and said "I like you." Embarrassed, Haruto immediately left, declaring "Like I could say that!"[32] The next day, Megumi visited Haruto's house. He told her to leave until Kobayashi asked "What's the harm in letting her stay a little while?" She cooked him and Kobayashi dinner, which caused the latter to pass out. After one bite, Haruto declared "I've come to a decision." He raced off to Oto's work, followed closely by Megumi. Once there, Haruto overheard Oto's conversation with Tenma about them deciding to date.[33]

After seeing Oto and Tenma together, Haruto ran back home and threw away all of his mail-order items. He called himself a fool and thought to himself that he could not win against Tenma. Haruto was absent from school for two days. When he returned, Megumi had transferred to Eitoku. Haruto ignored her and later decided to go home early. He accidentally bumped into someone on the street. Haruto insulted the guys, leading them to beat him up. Megumi, who had been following him, yelled for a police officer. She cried and told him "Stop hurting yourself," which touched Haruto.[34] Afterwards, Megumi and Haruto became friends and started to spend time together. She later dragged him to an amusement park. There he became dizzy and had to lie down. He and Megumi then noticed Oto and Tenma nearby.[35]

Attempts to give up Oto[]

—Haruto tries to give up on pursuing Oto[src]

Megumi suggested for them to spend the day together like a "double date." Haruto was against it until Megumi told him "Why don't you show them?" He started challenging Tenma to rides. In the haunted house, Tenma asked Haruto "Are you in love with Oto?" He answered "What if I were?," to which Tenma confidently declared "I won't give her up." They then went to the Ferris wheel next. Haruto absentmindedly got onto the same car as Oto.[36] During the ride, Oto accused him of "stringing [Megumi] along." He argued that she was doing the same to him and then nearly admitted his feelings to her. The ride stopped and a child was dangling out in the car below. Haruto climbed down and helped him back in. He then fell onto a mattress on the ground. Megumi ran to him and hugged him.[37]

Afterwards, Megumi confessed her feelings to Haruto. He was thinking about her confession when Oto visited him that night. She asked "Do you like me?" He admitted that he did. Oto thanked him for his honesty.[38] However, since she was dating Tenma, Oto requested that he stop pursuing her. Upset, Haruto asked why she had to date Tenma and if she felt "anything after hearing [his] confession." Oto told "There's nothing else for me to say" and left. Kobayashi tried to cheer him up with a puzzle, which was of Megumi's face with her phone number. She then appeared saying "I wanted to wait by the phone expectantly."[7] Later, Kaito, Issa, and Sugimaru told Haruto to about "Eitoku hunting." He decided to refocus on protecting Eitoku. Kaito advised Haruto to use Megumi to "level up his presence" as well.[39]

A few days later, Eitoku's gates were vandalized. Haruto was stunned by the act, which challenged the Correct 5's power. Oto then spurred some of the students into cleaning up the graffiti. Kaito pulled Haruto aside to say "We have to do something."[40] That night, Airi called Haruto concerned about Oto, who had failed to meet her. Annoyed, he suggesting that she visit Oto's work. Despite his attempts to be nonchalant, Haruto was worried.[41] Later the same night, Haruto went to Oto's work. Seeing spray paint on her face, he deduced that she had been attacked. She explained what happened, mentioning Tenma in the process. Haruto became irritated and told her "You probably don't care about Eitoku at all." Oto was hurt by his words and proceeded to tell him that she may transfer to Momonozono.[42]

Pursuing Oto again[]

"There's only one choice you can make. Whether she's right or wrong, you gotta believe whatever the girl you like says. If you care about her feelings, you should know that!"
—Haruto questions why Tenma does not believe her about Konoe[src]

Haruto told Oto to "hurry up" when she told him about transferring. Once outside, Haruto started running and cursed Tenma for taking her away from Eitoku. At home, Haruto went straight into the bath. Megumi barged in naked. Haruto covered his eyes. She then grabbed his hand, saying "All of this is yours."[43] Haruto started to wonder "Isn't it okay to give up?" Megumi then went to wait for him in his room. He waited a long time before entering the room. Once there, Megumi said "You must be used to this kind of thing" and tried to touch him. Haruto pushed her away and told her how "everything's a lie" about his life and image. He then declared "I only want what's real now." Megumi reminded him that Oto rejected him, to which he said "It's only over when I decide to end it." Megumi started to cry and called him a "fool."[44]

Some days later, Haruto saw Oto huddled against a building. He asked her if she was okay.[45] Haruto offered to take her home, seeing that she was crying. He then asked if she had a fight with Tenma. Haruto admitted that he was "jealous" that Tenma could make her so emotional and told her to stop crying. Oto tried to walk away but then collapsed clutching her stomach. Haruto rushed her to the hospital. After being treated, Oto began walking home and Haruto accompanied her, though she insisted that he did not have to. Near her home, they ran into Tenma and Hitoshi Konoe. Tenma asked Oto why she thought Konoe was behind the Eitoku attacks. Realizing why Oto was crying earlier, Haruto questioned why Tenma did not believe her, stating "Whether she's right or wrong, you gotta believe whatever the girl you like says."[46]

Before Haruto and Tenma could start fighting, Oto yelled at them all to go home but Haruto stayed. They walked to the park, where she washed her face. She then told him about seeing Konoe give money to the guys who attacked her. Before leaving, Haruto asked her if she was going to be okay at Momonozono. Oto said that she was not transferring, which made Haruto happy. He hugged her from behind, at which point Tenma walked up.[47] Oto broke Haruto's hold on her and told Tenma that he was "joking." Haruto denied what she said, saying "I just couldn't hold back my feelings anymore." Tenma called him "despicable" and then left with Oto. The following day, Oto warned Haruto to avoid fighting Tenma since he was an experienced martial artist. When Tenma confronted him that night, Haruto told him "Bring it on."[48]

Haruto vs. Tenma[]

Haruto-contest

"That's some personality you've got. I suspected that you were too good to be true. And now I finally see the dark side you've been hiding."
—Haruto after Tenma challenges him[src]

Haruto readily agreed to compete against Tenma in the "Manly Man Festival." Tenma stipulated that if he won Haruto would have to leave Oto alone. The next day, Haruto went to Sugimaru for advice. Sugimaru discussed the details of the contest and how talented Tenma was at martial arts. Despite his bad odds, Haruto refused to back out so Sugimaru brought him to train at his family's dojo in Kyoto.[49] There he practiced judo, kendo, and archery. While working on archery, Haruto met Sojiro Nishikado who was practicing for a different competition. Haruto explained his situation to Sojiro which had became more serious now that people thought it was a "battle between the two schools." Sojiro was not interested in helping until Haruto mentioned Oto, saying "I'm not against it, if it's for a girl."[50]

Haruto's archery skills improved immensely under Sojiro's care, though he still a long way to go. He later brought up Eitoku's fall from grace and his promise to Tsukasa. Sojiro found it hard to believe Tsukasa would say that, but wished him "good luck" with his efforts. On the day of the festival, Haruto was surprised by a huge crowd of Eitoku and Momonozono students. Seeing Konoe's face, he immediately knew who had leaked the news. He promised Konoe to "kick [his] butt" after the contest.[51] Haruto went into the first portion with confidence, having prepared a strategy with Sugimaru. However, he became shaken by Tenma's "aura," which caused him to falter for a second. Tenma was given the upper-hand and Haruto, unable to use his strategy, was quickly taken down.[52]

Before the second round, Haruto became frustrated by his friends' lack of faith in him. Tenma's mood had completely change since the first portion. He missed all three of his tries, while Haruto had managed to hit two targets. Afterwards, Haruto accused him of "going easy" on him. Konoe then showed up and Tenma punched him, now knowing the truth about him. Haruto ended up winning the whole competition, after Tenma did not show up for the last event.[53] He was a bit depressed about how he won and talked it over with Sojiro, who said "A win's a win." Haruto then went to meet Oto at her hotel. He declared "Go break up with him! And then be with me." Haruto asked her to meet him at Shijo Ohashi Bridge later if she cared for him.[54] She replied "I'm not going", though he only reiterated his promise to wait for her.[55]

Changes for Haruto[]

Oto-Airi-shocked

Haruto shocks Oto and Airi with his new coldness

Haruto: "It doesn't matter anymore. The thing I regret now is that I wasted the winter of my precious junior year focused on that festival. That's all. But, because of that, Eitoku was able to bounce back. It was fun going one-on-one with you."
Tenma: "You've changed."
— Tenma is surprised by Haruto's new attitude[src]

After waiting for four hours, Haruto was still confident that Oto would arrive, even telling two strangers as much. He started to prepare himself to call Oto by her first name for the first time. As night approached, it began raining in heavily though he still continued to wait.[56] By morning, Haruto believed that he had been rejected, or in his words "completely dissed." Kaito, Issa, and Sugimaru arrived with umbrellas to take him home. Haruto began crying and told them "Rain doesn't bring out the best in me."[57] A few days later, Kaito reported to Haruto about Tenma getting stabbed in Kyoto. It happened the same day that Haruto was waiting for Oto, who was also with Tenma at the time. Haruto did not view this as hope, saying "She didn't say anything or come to me. That's her answer." He then declared "It's all over."[58]

Haruto spent Christmas on his yacht with Kaito. Later, the Correct 5 celebrated New Years' Eve together. Kaito made an announcement about joining forces with Momonozono. Haruto refused to answer since he felt that Tenma owed him an apology. Tenma came into the room and apologized to Haruto, who then agreed to the partnership.[59] Eitoku's popularity grew over the next six months, while Haruto became more cold. After recovering, Tenma visited Haruto. He explained what happened between him and Oto in Kyoto, including their breakup. Haruto replied "It doesn't matter anymore," claiming "It's all in the past". The next day, Haruto passed by Airi and Oto in the hallway. Airi asked him to "persuade" Oto to go on the joint summer trip between the two schools. He looked at Oto coldly and said "So what?"[60]

Later on the summer trip, Haruto noticed that he had several missed calls from Kobayashi but ignored them. Haruto joined a random snorkeling tour group, instead of going on Megumi's yacht. He was annoyed to find that Oto was in the same group. The two of them ended up being stranded in the ocean, when the boat left them by accident.[61] Haruto called Oto a "curse" and refused to speak to her for four hours. She started to pass out, so he offered to hold her. She refused, saying "Why should you care?!" He told that he did not want her to die and started holding her anyway.[62] Just before she fell unconscious, Oto apologized for not meeting him that day on the bridge. The two were then rescued by Airi and Tenma. Haruto decided to return home that night. Oto thanked him for saving her and promised him a favor.[63]

Disowned by his father[]

Haruto teases Oto by asking for a "birthday kiss"

"There was a time when all I could think of was you. When I waited all day for you on that bridge and then you didn't come that was the first time I ever felt despair. I couldn't get out of bed for days after that. I was so pissed off at you. I was numb to everything around me. Even though you knew I was waiting, I didn't hear from you at all."
—Haruto to Oto[src]

Back in Tokyo, Haruto was barred from entering his home by Kobayashi. He was shown a video of his father reporting that Haruto had "failed the test." His father revealed that he planned to adopt a new heir, Kei Windsor, who then introduced himself. Without his phone or wallet, Haruto was forced to sleep at the train station that night. The following day, he waited for Oto at her job. He called in that favor she promised and asked to stay at her place.[64] She then brought him to her apartment, where they learned her mother was on a trip. That night, Haruto admitted to Oto that he had wanted to "block out the part of [him] that like [her]," which was why he had been acting coldly. Oto then told him that she had sent him a note that day on the bridge. Hearing this, Haruto almost "[took] her in [his] arms" but stopped himself.[8]

The next day, Haruto went to Kaito's house and learned that he was in Hawaii..[65] During dinner, Haruto realized it was his eighteenth birthday. Not having a gift, Oto offered to do "anything." Haruto teased her by asking for a kiss. She became irritated with him when he said he was "just kidding." Oto attempted to hit him with and lost her balance, falling on top of Haruto. They quickly extricated themselves when Airi arrived at the apartment seconds later.[3] Haruto decided to stay at Airi's house instead. She insisted that he sleep in her bed, which he complained about saying "We're not kids anymore." Airi confessed to Haruto that she had been feeling jealous of Oto. He guessed that she liked Tenma, which he said was "never going to happen." Seeing her cry, Haruto comforted her until she fell asleep.[66]

Kobayashi came to Airi's house to see Haruto the following day. He informed that he had resigned from his position and was going to return to his hometown. Haruto told Kobayashi to wait for him there and left to confront Kei. He found him in town with Oto.[67] Seeing them together, Haruto was confused and irritated. Kei called Oto by her first name, leading Haruto to say "Are you two all chummy now?". Eventually Kei told him that he was helping out at Oto's job and asked Haruto what he wanted. He told Kei to allow Kobayashi to continue working and then turned to leave. Oto stopped him, trying to explain the situation. Her words angered him and he flung harsh words at her, such as "You're always trying to please everyone!" Kei then defended her so Haruto said "Two shifty people like you make a good match."[68]

Dealing with Kei[]

Haruto: "I can't! How can I face her, after telling her that two shifty people like them made a good match?"
Kaito: "That's what's holding you back? She's being deceived!"
Haruto: "Maybe she's with him by choice!"
— Haruto suspects Oto is with Kei[src]

Back at Airi's, Haruto told Kobayashi to return to the mansion but he refused. Haruto snapped, saying "Stop sniveling and go back!" He immediately regretted his words and apologized.[69] Later, Kaito came back to Tokyo and visited Airi's house where he found Haruto. Kobayashi then rushed in with documents he found in Kei's room. The papers were information relating to the Kaguragis and Oto.[70] After relating the whole story to Kaito, he advised Haruto to go explain himself to Oto. Haruto refused and said "Maybe she's with [Kei] by choice!" Airi then came home and informed them that Oto was going to America with a friend, which she had learned from her mother. Haruto realized who she was talking about. He promptly rushed to the airport, where he found Kei forcefully holding Oto's arm. He declared "Let go of her."[71]

Haruto exposed Kei's intentions to Oto. He stood in front of her saying "Don't drag her into this!" Kei eventually left, realizing he had loss. The two were shortly approached by Sojiro and Akira Mimasaka, who offered them a ride home.[72] In the car, Sojiro invited them to Akira's house, where they locked them in the guesthouse as a joke. A few minutes later, Haruto said "If you wanted to go, I should've let you" and then insinuated that she had feelings for Kei. Oto admitted "I wanted to see you."[73] Haruto grappled with his thoughts and memories for several minutes, before deciding to take a chance. He then embraced her, declaring "I'll get beaten down as many times as it takes." They were then interrupte by Sojiro and Akira. Haruto lastly told her that he wanted to "spend more time with [her]" after dealing with his family situation.[74]

"I didn't think for a minute that you were fully committed to just me. I know that personality of yours. It's so messed up with your overthinking. But it can't be helped. I can't compete with your past. So, let's make our own memories from now on, you and me."
—Haruto does not ask Oto to forget Tenma[src]

Before dropping her home, Haruto asked for Oto's phone number. He later texted her "I'm gonna do my best. So you give it your best too!" Haruto finally returned home where he asked Kei about his motivations. Kei stated that "[Haruto] looked like [he] had it all". However, Kei realized that "[Haruto] didn't have anything" after meeting him.[75] Later, Haruto invited Kaito, Issa, and Sugimaru over to his house. He asked Issa for advice on dating spots. Issa and Sugimaru were surprised to learn he was dating Oto. When they asked him if she confessed, he answered that she said his name and that she wanted to see him. To this, they said "That's not dating!" Haruto became annoyed and kicked them out.[76] He later purchased a yukata for Oto since he was planning a summer festival at his house. Haruto also texted her an invitation to it.[77]

Oto read his message but did not respond to it right away, which made Haruto nervous until she replied. A few days later, Oto arrived with Konno and Mi-tan for the festival. Haruto complimented Oto's appearance and mentioned that he had invited Tenma but he had declined.[78] Sugimaru let it slip to Oto about Haruto worrying over her responding earlier. He attempted to play it down as nothing. A few minutes later, he leaned in to kiss Oto but she suddenly pulled away from him.[79] Airi arrived shortly and started to hyperventilate, so Oto took her inside to recuperate. Haruto overheard Oto telling Airi that she could not forget her memories with Tenma. He interrupted, declaring "Let's make our own memories from now on." Once Airi left, Haruto asked her to go out with him saying "I like you just as you are."[80]

At the start of the second term, Kaito confided in Haruto about his crush on Airi. Kaito was pessimistic about the odds of her liking him back. Haruto dismissed this, saying "Your heart is what counts!" After giving a speech to the student body, the two found Oto and Airi. Haruto's words gave Kaito the courage to confess his feelings to Airi and made up his mind to start pursuing her.[81] Later, Haruto went to see Tenma, who was packing. He related his transfer to Momonozono's new branch in Los Angeles. Tenma then asked Haruto not to tell Oto. When he returned home, Haruto told Kaito the news. That night, he struggled with the decision to tell Oto or not. The next morning, he rushed to Oto's and pushed her inside a car, just telling her that Tenma was leaving. He then promised to wait there for her.[82]

Problems with Oto's mother[]

Haruto-with-Oto

Haruto and Oto realize Airi has trapped them together

"I really don't get it. I want to be with you. But it's not like I've ever gotten a concrete answer from you. I'm just assuming that you've chosen me. Sometime I have my doubts. Maybe I've got it all wrong..."
—Haruto voices his insecurity to Oto[src]

Once Oto left, Haruto called Kaito who asked "What if [she] ends up going with him?" Haruto answered "I trust her." Oto's mother then walked up, asking where her daughter went.[83] He explained everything inside. He also revealed that he had stayed at their home before. She became angry and promptly kicked him out. Oto arrived seconds later and thanked him. He then asked for a hug, but her mother dragged her away. A week later, Airi tricked him into going to her vacation home.[84] Now alone with Oto, the two were also stranded due to a storm. While perusing the pantry, Haruto mentioned Megumi which made Oto mad. Exasperated, he revealed that he felt uneasy in their relationship. She then ran outside and Haruto followed. Oto finally admitted her feelings and he hugged her out of happiness.[5]

Back inside, Oto went to take a bath first while Haruto tried to dry himself with a towel. She then caught him undressing and ran away flustered. After their baths, Haruto found some writing on a wall from when the Correct 5 were children. Oto pointed out something Amei wrote, but Haruto pretended not to recognize it. He changed the subject to Oto's mother, promising to speak with her.[9] A few minutes later, her mother and Airi walked in on the couple kissing while still wearing robes. She refused to hear out Haruto's entreaties and dragged Oto out of the house. He and Airi decided to spend the night there because of the storm. Asking about Kaito, Haruto suggested she go on a date with him. She agreed but only if it was a double date with him and Oto. Airi then told him that Amei was due to return soon.[85]

Amei's return[]

Haruto: "Sorry, I thought it was all over. I had no idea that you felt this way, after all these years."
Amei: "Did you forget everything from back then?"
Haruto: "Of course I haven't forgotten. You were the one who saved me. I would have been so much lonelier without you"
— Haruto acknowledges Amei's importance which gives her closure[src]

The following day, Haruto and Airi came back to Tokyo and picked Oto up from work. They went to a café, where they discussed ways to get Oto's mother to accept Haruto. She mentioned a girl asking her for directions to his house. He became concerned that she was crazed fan. Once outside, Amei suddenly appeared and hugged Haruto. He promptly pushed her away, leading her to say "Is that any way to treat your first crush?"[86] Haruto introduced Oto as his girlfriend to Amei. He then hurried away with Oto. Haruto explained that he had not told her about Amei because he felt that it was all in the past. Oto calmly accepted his reason, even giggling at him being flustered. A day or so later, Haruto met up with Kaito at a park for the double date. The two then waited for Airi and Oto to show up.[14]

After Airi arrived, Oto showed up with Amei. Haruto told her to go home, but the others agreed that it was okay. After eating hot dogs, everyone decided to go onto the pond. Picking groups by rock-paper-scissors, Haruto was forced onto the same boat as Amei. She then asked him why he stopped messaging her, which he denied doing.[87] He then told her "Let's stop talking about the past." At her prompting, Haruto promised to treat her like a childhood friend. Afterwards, everyone minus Oto went to Amei's welcoming party at Issa's. Haruto snuck away and went to Oto's house.[88] He brought her to his house to explain his past with Amei. When Oto asked if it had gone differently, Haruto interrupted and declared "No matter how many choices I'm given, I'll always pick you in the end."[15]

The next morning, Oto texted Haruto telling him that her father wanted to meet him that weekend. He asked all of his friends for advice.[89] That weekend, Haruto was on his way to Oto's when his driver saw Amei chasing after the car. In tears, she said "I can't forget you" and then collapsed. After taking her to the hospital, he called Oto to say he was going to be late. Haruto showed up four hours later.[90] Oto's father pulled him outside and told Haruto a story of Oto giving up something precious to someone else. On his way home, Haruto spotted Amei again. He tried to let her down easy, but she became upset and embraced him.[91] When he noticed Oto nearby, he tried to push Amei away. Haruto apologized to her and credited her with "saving" him when he was a child. Oto had left, so he walked Amei home.[92]

Los Angeles trip[]

Haruto-Oto-asleep

Haruto finds himself unable to sleep next to Oto

Oto: "I didn't tell them that you were with me in L.A. They let me go because Tenma was over there..."
Haruto: "Why didn't you tell them I came to L.A.? You had a phone. If you continue to keep things from your parents like that, I'll never get my foot in the door."
— Haruto and Oto after returning to Tokyo[src]

When Oto did not show up at school, Haruto became irritable thinking about what her father said before. He decided to wait for her, telling Kaito that there had to be a "reasonable explanation." That night, he happened to see her and Tenma on a news program. Haruto ordered a plane without thinking.[93] Upon arrival, Haruto went storming around Tenma's school calling Oto's name. He was arrested and taken to a police station, where he called the consulate. Tenma arrived and brought him to Oto. Alone together, everything was cleared up between the couple. He then asked her to spend the night at his hotel.[94] Once there, he told her that nothing could happen between them since he still wanted to "win over [her] mother." She wanted to sleep in the same bed, causing him to lay awake all night.[95]

The next morning, the Correct 5 made a surprise appearance. Having not slept, Haruto was noticeably exasperated with them. On the way to Tenma's school, Oto told Haruto that she was worried about Airi and Kaito. He agreed that they were acting strange.[96] Kaito disappeared while Tenma was giving them a tour. Oto informed Haruto that Kaito had returned to the hotel. The other guys started a basketball match. Haruto and Tenma won against Issa and Sugimaru.[97] Afterwards, Haruto and Oto returned to the hotel, where they found Kaito. When he explained what happened with Airi, Oto yelled at him for being dishonest.[98] Kaito then rushed off to find Airi. Haruto and Oto followed and found them embracing. He then proposed that they go on their own date. The couple met Tsukushi Makino on the boardwalk.[99]

Haruto was put-off by Tsukushi, who accidentally insulted the Correct 5. He remarked "What does Mr. Domyoji see in her?" The next morning, Tenma brought everyone to his friend's house. Haruto was ecstatic to meet Tsubaki Domyoji, calling Tenma "awesome" for knowing her. He was annoyed to see Tsukushi again. After they were introduced, she made a joking apology.[100] Haruto then perused the photos albums to see Tsukasa. Later, Tenma reminded him to "Take care of Oto." Haruto replied "Leave it to me." The Correct 5 and Oto boarded Haruto's plane that night.[101] They soon discovered that Tsukushi had snuck aboard. While she slept, Haruto called her "shameless." Once they landed, he told Oto that he was going home with her to talk to her parents. To his annoyance, Oto invited Tsukushi along.[102]

Tsukushi and the F4[]

Haruto meets Tsukasa again

"After meeting the F4... Seeing them, made me want to follow after them. I want to catch up and be at the same level. I'm not trying to be someone else. I want to be myself, and I will always be straightforward with you, Oto. I want you to come with me."
—Haruto discusses the future with Oto[src]

At Oto's house, they were joined by Rui who was there to pick up Tsukushi. Oto's parents arrived shortly. They revealed to the couple that they would not object to their relationship but it would have to be long-distance since they were moving to Kyushu. Haruto and Oto went outside to discuss it. Tsukushi encouraged them not to separate.[103] Back inside, they expressed their wish not to be apart. Her father told them that Oto could stay at her aunt's place. He also warned Haruto that they would come get Oto if anything were to happen. Afterwards, they met up with Tsukushi and Haruto thanked her.[104] The next day, he was going to say goodbye to Tsukushi when he happened to meet the F4. Haruto quickly assessed the situation and called Oto to stall the plane. Thanks to Haruto, Tsukasa was able to meet Tsukushi.[105]

After Tsukushi and Tsukasa had talked, she introduced him to Haruto who reminded him about the time they met. It took a minute for Tsukasa to remember. He told Haruto that he probably entrusted Eitoku to him "in the heat of the moment." Tsukasa said "We'll probably meet again someday." Haruto was overjoyed.[106] A few days later, Haruto visited Oto at her new apartment. They waited for several hours for the others to arrive. When Haruto went to leave, Oto stopped him and admitted that she felt lonely. He started to kiss her.[107] They were interrupted by Oto's aunt who approved of Haruto and left soon after. Haruto talked to Oto about the future, telling her "I want you to come with me." He then left, feeling that he was "taking advantage of [her]." Oto came after him and told him "I'll go with you."[108]

Haruto and Oto began walking towards his house. Along the way, they were approached by a teenager attempting to rob them. Haruto realized he was not "acting alone" and scared off the others. He then encouraged the teen to change. At his house, he told Kobayashi that Oto was spending the night. They went up to his room and spent the night in each other's arms.[109] Sometime later, he talked with his father about preparing to enter the business world after graduation. Haruto surprised him by saying "I'll try my best." On Christmas, Haruto and the others attended Konno's wedding. During the reception, he and Oto slipped away. He gave her a ring as a promise for a future proposal. At school, Haruto was approached by the same teen. He jokingly advised the kid "Don't ever go hunting for commoners."[110]

Physical appearance[]

According to Issa, Haruto was considered more cute than handsome. However, following a "transformative experience" he became traditionally handsome, earning the attention of numerous girls.[60] Haruto was 176 centimeters tall during his second year of high school. He had a growth spurt and grew taller by two centimeters. From early middle school, Haruto always wanted to improve his small build. He did not make much headway until Sugimaru helped him train for the Manly Man Festival. Afterwards, Haruto stopped training so much but managed to retain a lot of the muscle mass he gained. Haruto had wavy, almost black hair, which he had cut shorter before his third year.

Personality and traits[]

During his childhood, Haruto developed an inferiority complex from failing to gain his father's approval as well as for being bullied for his small stature. He began trying to change himself after meeting Tsukasa, who inspired him to become strong. His complex remained though and was perhaps exasperated from him hero-worshiping Tsukasa and the F4. This was exhibited when he compared himself to Tenma, who embodied many of the qualities Haruto wanted. He went though a gradual and major change after falling for Oto. Haruto became a stronger person and was more confident in himself.

His privileged upbringing also had an effect on Haruto, hindering his social skills and other aspects of his life. Haruto's favorite hobby was buying mail-order items though he tried to keep it a secret. He later lost faith in these "good luck" items as well as horoscopes, which he often consulted before.
