This article is about the drama CDs. For other uses, see Hana Yori Dango.

Hana Yori Dango (花より男子 (はなよりだんご) ) is a series of three audio dramas, also called drama CDs[4] or CD books[5], based on the Boys Over Flowers manga. They were released by Shueisha from July 1993 to July 1994 on both CD and cassette tape.[6][7]

All three of the audio dramas starred the voices of Takuya Kimura (SMAP) as Rui Hanazawa, Chisa Yokoyama as Tsukushi Makino, and Takumi Nishio as Tsukasa Domyoji.

Tsukushi Makino, a commoner, has a crush on the handsome and rich, Rui Hanazawa.[6] Unfortunately, the other members of Rui's group, the F4, are becoming troublesome, particularly the leader Tsukasa Domyoji.[2]

Things take a turn for the worse, when Tsukushi and Tsukasa accidentally kiss at the party on his ship. Meanwhile, Rui's first love, Shizuka Todo returns to Japan.[3]

Cast and characters

Prior to the release of the first CD drama, fans and Yoko Kamio had voiced their support for Takuya Kimura (from the popular boy band SMAP) to play Rui Hanazawa in a Hana Yori Dango film.[8] Coincidentally, a film adaptation was produced in 1995, though without Kimura.

The editorial staff of Margaret negotiated with Kimura for him to voice Rui Hanazawa in a CD drama.[8] The role was his first time voice acting. Watanabe wrote the script for the drama and the recording lasted for a total of seven hours from 11:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Yoko Kamio sat in for part of the recording and was happy about the results, also feeling that the voice actors suited her characters. Kamio and Kimura also did an interview and posed for photosfor Margaret No.15 of 1993.[4][5]
